DIY Brightening Mask for Acne, Rosacea and Gorgeously Glowing Skin

Turmeric, A.K.A. the godsend miracle spice we use in and on everything — including food, drinks and most recently, our faces.

Healthy Ingredient Highlight: Turmeric Root

Turmeric is a potent natural anti-inflammatory agent that’s been proven to work as well as many anti-inflammatory drugs without the harsh side effects. It’s loaded with antioxidants, polyphenols (micronutrients that help prevent and protect cells from free radical damage), and has been widely used for centuries in ancient Ayurvedic healing traditions and Chinese medicine.

The primary active ingredient in turmeric is called cucurmin. Not only does cucurmin lower inflammation (the root cause of most—if not all—chronic disease and premature aging), it actually prevents it by blocking its formation on a molecular level.

Because cucurmin is fat-soluable, it’s best to pair it with a heart healthy fat source like hemp seeds, coconut, or avocado to increase bioavailability and nutrient absorption. Aside from complexing it with healthy fat, black pepper actually improves cucurmin’s bioavailability by up to 2,000% (!).

Turmeric can be found in pure root form in most health food stores, as well as powdered in the spice section of almost all markets. Sprinkle it on salads and stir-frys, add it to sunshine shots for a delightfully luminescent hewe, or (our current most loved use), apply it to your face.

While this well kept beauty secret is somewhat new to us, Indian brides have been using turmeric as a head-to-toe body scrub and brightening skin mask for thousands of years. For those of us with sensitive skin, turmeric is a total lifesaver for soothing inflammatory skin conditions like acne, rosacea, psoriasis and eczema. It evens out skin tone, reduces pigmentation, diminishes wrinkles and gives you a sun-kissed golden glow like no other. Basically, it’s the best kept secret for modern-day anti-aging, fighting inflammation, brightening up that already stunning complexion and professional grade DIY beauty.

DIY Turmeric Mask for Acne, Rosacea and Gorgeously Glowing Skin

This multitasking DIY face mask is brightening, exfoliating, hydrating, soothing, nourishing, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and guaranteed to bring back your sun-kissed summer skin. The perfect self-care Sunday ritual, we’ve turned this easy-to-make miracle mix into a welcomed weekly occurrence.

½ tsp powdered turmeric
1 tbsp-ish ripe avocado
½ tsp raw honey
1 tsp oat flour
1 tsp lemon juice
water or rose water to form a paste

In a small bowl, combine turmeric and oat flour. Add raw honey, lemon juice and avocado, mix well. Add 1 tbs of water (or rose water) at a time until it forms a paste. Apply it to your face (avoiding eye area) for 20 minutes and rinse off with lukewarm water.

To make your own oat flour, pulse ½ cup rolled oats in your high powered blender or food processor until you have a fine powder (about 2-3 minutes). Store leftover oat flour in a sealed container in your pantry or make these.

You’ve been warned: That crazy healthy cucurmin we mentioned earlier? It stains virtually everything. Including your clothes and your fingernails. Therefore, save your manicure for the day after your face mask,  wear an old t-shirt that could use some brightening, and rinse off this mix with a dark towel you don’t care about.

Will it stain my face?

Possibly, but not forever. If you leave it on for 20 minutes this mix should not stain your face. If you leave it on for longer (like an entire episode of Game of Thrones), it will leave you looking slightly yellow. If you’re worried about staining, we recommend doing this mask before bed as opposed to an important meeting. You’ll wake up with a gorgeously golden hewe and avoid the slightly strange conversation with your boss.
