In an effort to cut through the complex and convoluted, wrap our (logical) minds around the subject, and of course, bring you info that’s actually easy to understand, today, we’re diving into all things energy healing, including, why we’re obsessed with it.
Energy healing, energy medicine, or energy therapy as it’s sometimes referred to, is a holistic healing practice that activates the body’s subtle energy systems to remove energetic blocks. Rooted in the scientific belief that everything (including our tissues, muscles, cells, organs, and entire physical body), is made up of vibrations of energy, by releasing these energetic blocks, we stimulate the body’s natural ability to heal itself. Inner Alchemy at it’s finest.
There are tons and tons of different energy healing methods including: hands-on contact healing, hands-off healing, and distance or ‘absent’ healing where the patient and healer are in two different locations. All rely on the basic premise that all physical reality is made up of vibrations of energy and universally agree, when the energetic body is well, the physical body is well, and when there’s an energetic imbalance, meaning, your energy gets blocked, stuck, or becomes stagnant, there is a corresponding physical / emotional / psychological imbalance.
Although all energy healing techniques tap into the body's own ability for healing and regard energy as medicine, a session with an energy healer varies immensely. Sessions can include tapping (EFT), breathwork, meditation, massage, acupuncture (needling), cupping, acupressure, Reiki, and/or a myriad of other healing modalities.
WHICH ONE’S RIGHT FOR YOU?
Based on the idea that universal life force energy flows through us, Reiki, the ancient Japanese tradition of energy healing dates back to the early 20th century. Using gentle hands-on touch techniques or hands-off hovering a few inches away from the body, Reiki practitioners are taught to attune themselves to a specific frequency, and channel it for healing. I’ve heard Reiki described as a “gentle combing of the energetic body”. Although we’ve yet to try it ourselves, we’re all for a gentle energetic comb.
Based on the 12 major meridians, or energy superhighways of the body, acupuncture (one of the core components of traditional Chinese medicine), utilizes the manipulation of fine stainless steel needles to help clear energetic obstructions, nourish areas of deficiency, and attain energetic balance to improve health and overall wellbeing. According to my acupuncturist, “Acupuncture achieves the desired results by stimulating specific points near or on the surface of the skin that have the ability to alter biochemical and physiological conditions in the body. Because acupuncture points are designated areas of electrical sensitivity, inserting needles at these points stimulates sensory receptors.” We looooooove and swear by this ancient healing technique, and should also note that we both hate (!!) needles.
Not just for your feet! Reflexology is a non-invasive, hands-on, complementary healing treatment that stimulates specific pressure points on the feet, hands, face and ears to affect various organs, glands and parts of the body. Each reflexology pressure point is said to correspond to, and connect with, a different body part. Unlike massage that uses broad strokes, reflexology simply involves using the fingers and thumbs to press specific reflex pressure points. While neither of us have any profound healing breakthroughs during a reflexology session, we both agree that it’s an incredible way to relax.
Tapping, EFT, or Emotional Freedom Technique, is a self-healing acupressure technique that involves gently tapping various points on the body (top of the head, inner eyebrow, side of the eye, under the eye) in conjunction with positive psychology (a mantra/script) to dismantle negative thought patterns. According to Jessica Ortner, author of The Tapping Solution for Weight Loss and Body Confidence, “By stimulating these acupressure points while focusing on the thought that is causing the stress, your body is communicating to your brain that it's safe to relax.”
We love EFT because it’s fast, easy, and you can do it by yourself. No special equipment required, you just need to know the technique.
Until you’re comfortable with the points and making up your own script, YouTube videos are the way to go.
An insanely powerful hands-off approach to healing, this is what we think of when we hear the term “energy healing.” If you thought things were weird, they’re about to get weirder.
Paraphrased from Dr. Eric Pearl, founder of the Reconnective Healing movement and author of The Reconnection: Heal Yourself, Heal Others, “Reconnective Healing completely transcends traditional energy healing techniques as it allows us to let go of the concept and approach of technique itself. It is neither a therapy nor a treatment, as it does not focus on symptoms. It is something much, much more. Reconnective Healing is a return to an optimal state of balance. It is the result of interacting with the fully comprehensive Reconnective Healing spectrum of frequencies that consists of energy, light and information. It’s tangible, measurable… you can actually feel it. We teach you how to discover, access and become aware of your relationship with these Reconnective Healing Frequencies bringing about healings that are often instantaneous and tend to be lifelong.”
Basically, a Reconnective practitioner moves their hands above your body in a way that opens up the body to different types of frequencies. From there, the body’s natural intelligence intercedes without the practitioner manipulating or touching the body. In essence, the healer or practitioner, is acting as a conduit while the client unconsciously summons the exact frequencies they need. For example, someone coming in with lower back pain might not realize that the body's intelligence needs to fix something else in the body or mind, which is only presenting itself as a low back issue. It's a quick practice, with three sessions usually being the maximum recommended as this kind of healing gets straight to the source of the imbalance. Reconnective healing is sometimes used in combination with other energy healing techniques.
This one is weird AF but crazy powerful and if we try to explain it, we'll not only confuse you, but we’ll likely confuse ourselves as well. Therefore, we highly recommend going to a Matrix Energetics conference to learn more about this technique (think: time travel, parallel universes, alternate dimensions, frequencies, you know, all the usual dinner-date conversation starters).
Based on the laws and expression of subtle energy physics and the concepts and laws of quantum physics, superstring theory and Sheldrake's Morphic Resonance, when applied, Matrix Energetics often has a VERY observable effect. Erika was pulled on stage for a demo at a Matrix Energetics conference and collapsed to the floor, twice. She’s usually a rather stable individual, especially in front of a crowd.
While this list is nowhere near extensive, when choosing a practitioner ALWAYS do your research. Even though you don’t have to completely grasp the concept, understand it, or even believe in it to benefit or see results, it helps to trust who you’re working with.
