When we hear the word detox we usually think: restriction, starvation, and extreme hanger — totally understandable. Society has positioned the term as a quick fix to lose weight rather than a crucial component to loving your body and eating and living well. What isn’t common is the idea that we should always be detoxing. And no, we’re not talking about waking up every single morning with a coffee enema, counting every single calorie, or sipping every single meal through a straw. We mean the opposite. We mean actually living your life in a way that gently, and continuously, and most importantly, healthfully supports your body’s natural detoxification pathways. Which IS actually a form of self-love and *spoiler alert* always comes back to your food. So, in an effort to save you and your precious body from hardcore cleansing (ahem, starvation), and instead, help you feel your absolute best, nourish every cell in your being, and glow from the inside out, we’ve rounded up 6 of our favorite foods to eat for daily detoxification and total body vibrancy.

But first, a quick word on detoxification.

Our bodies are constantly in detox mode. It’s one of those amazing ingenious internal processes like digestion, metabolism, reproduction, respiration, etc., our bodies just do for us. We don’t even have to think about it. However, because of the constant influx of 21st century toxins, chemicals, and chronic stressors — think: processed foods, environmental pollution, depleted soil, negative self-deprecating thoughts, staring at the computer for 10 hours, late nights, job-hate, energy drinks, traffic, we could keep going… — our detoxification pathways are constantly working overdrive. Overtime, this constant state of SOS exhaustion can throw your entire system off. Like off-off. And eventually result in disease.

Instead of succumbing to the same state of burnout that’s currently plaguing the population, we prefer to be empowered, and healthy, and in the spirit of self-love, to help our bodies out (after all, we only get one!) as much as we possibly can. 

Which again, always come back to our food.

Support Your Body: The Top 6 Foods To Eat For Daily Detoxification And High-Vibe Health

1. Dark leafy greens -

You’ve probably heard this before but regularly consuming green leafy vegetables is one of the absolute best things you can do for your health. Leafy green vegetables (especially dark leafy greens), are more nutrient dense than any other food group. They purify the blood, promote a strong nervous system, support eye health, cleanse your skin, assist in liver detoxification, improve bowel function, reduce acid indigestion, prevent anemia, and act as digestive magic. If you only take one thing from this post, make it greens!

How to eat:

Kale isn’t your only option. Rotate between watercress, spinach, arugula, mustard greens, radicchio, escarole, and dandelion. Use as a base to any salad, blend with fruit into a smoothie, or saute with a bit of coconut oil.

Note* Some greens can be bitter so keep that in mind when choosing your greens. Cilantro and dandelion are especially great for detoxification.

2. Raw Unfiltered Apple Cider Vinegar -

Raw ACV stimulates circulation and aids in detoxification of the liver and lymph nodes. It also contains live probiotics which promote healthy microflora (bacteria) in the gut. When taken regularly, apple cider vinegar helps with gastrointestinal discomfort, indigestion, and can help clear up chronic acid reflux. ACV may also aid in weight loss by stabilizing the blood sugar for a longer period and helping to control appetite.

How to use:

Take 1-2 tablespoons of raw apple cider vinegar before each meal as a shot or as a dressing on salads and stirfrys.

Note* Look for organic, raw, and unfiltered ACV. Anything that’s been heated or filtered won’t have the same benefits. We love Bragg’s Apple Cider Vinegar. And don’t be scared if you see sediment floating at the bottom of the bottle — that’s actually a good thing. 3. Cultured or Fermented Foods -

Gut health is the mecca to a well functioning body, clear mind, and total high-vibe health. It doesn’t matter what you’re eating if your gut isn’t healthy enough to absorb the nutrients. Consuming cultured or fermented foods on a daily basis re-establishes a healthy inner ecosystem and dramatically improves digestion and the body’s ability to absorb nutrients. Foods like raw sauerkraut, kimchi, and coconut kefir are loaded with digestive enzymes and gut balancing probiotics.

How to eat:

Try 2 tablespoons - ¼ cup with each meal. Raw store-bought fermented foods can get pricey so make your own homemade sauerkraut with this super simple recipe.

4. Water -

OK, h2o is not a food per say, but proper hydration is the foundation for detoxification and therefore should not be overlooked. Drinking 8 glasses/ 2-3 liters of water a day helps flush out unwanted toxins from your body, prevents constipation, fatigue, acne and skin issues. To repeat ourselves, adequate water intake is SO important!

5. Lemon -

Despite their acidic taste, lemons have an alkalizing effect on our internal pH levels making them ideal for cleansing and detoxification. Lemon juice also stimulates the release of bile and digestive enzymes, purifies the liver, hydrates the lymph, and is a natural diuretic. Notoriously high in Vitamin C, one of nature’s key water soluble antioxidants, lemons help neutralize free radicals and therefore protect our cells from damage. Warning: drinking warm water with lemon in the mornings (before or, in place of your am coffee) will change your life.

How to have it:

Rise and shine with warm lemon water to alkalize the body, wash away accumulated toxins and get your digestive juices flowing. 6. Detox Teas -

Again, not food, but there are tons of herbal teas (derived from plants, aka, food) that promote detoxification and make a great addition to your daily eats. Look for teas with dandelion root, ginger, licorice root, burdock, or rose petals as they gently nourish your detoxification organs.

How to have it:

Throughout the day or before bed. There is no wrong time to have tea. Unless it’s immediately after an ice cold smoothie which isn’t exactly *wrong* (you do you, mom), but will probably result in digestive discomfort. PS. Drinking tea does not count towards your daily water intake.
